Keyservers are well known hosts who's primary purpose is to distribute public keys. These hosts are trusted to distribute correct information, and are (hopefully) secure against compromise.
Keyservers, and all Public Key Encryption systems, are vulnerable to Man in the Middle attacks.
Several common keyservers are:
- wwwkeys.pgp.net
- pgp.mit.edu
- keyserver.stinkfoot.org
To use a keyserver with GPG, simply add one or more lines to your ~/.gnupg/options file:
keyserver keyserver.stinkfoot.org keyserver pgp.mit.northwestern.edu
