Gingerale
I believe some call it gingerbeer, but feel free to correct this if gingerbeer is something different.
Tools
- Empty 2L plastic bottle (I used a commercial gingerale bottle ;)
- cutting board
- funnel
- measuring tools
- grater/shredder
Ingredients
- 2 cups of cane sugar
- 1 tablespoon of shredded ginger root
- 1 lemon
- bakers yeast
- water
Instructions
I filled a bowl with shredded ginger root, and funneled this into the 2L bottle with the lemon juice (feel free to use some water if required). I then added the sugar, and filled with water. Shake this mixture. Finally, I added in the yeast and put the lid on tight, storing it at room temperature. Within 1-2 days, the yeast will carbonate the beverage, and yes it will create a slight amount of alcohol. In my test, the next day I was barely able to push the sides of the bottle in, so I knew it was carbonated quite well. I then placed the bottle in the fridge, to stall the yeast from continuing, yeast doesn't like the cold temperature. My gingerale was safe in there for several days, until I was ready to drink it. My guests preferred that I filter it through a strainer when pouring into glasses.
Further tests
- I will measure with a hydrometer next time to see how much alcohol/volume is created, but I will estimate very little
- Adjust the amount of ginger root/lemon to my preferred taste
