There are various VNC servers and clients. In this example, I'm running tightvncserver on Debian GNU/Linux and tightvncviewer on WinXP.
On the server:
$ tightvncserver
New 'X' desktop is debbie:1
Starting applications specified in /home/yashy/.vnc/xstartup Log file is /home/yashy/.vnc/debbie:1.log
On the desktop:
